Did you know that the very first coin struck in the Colonies was most likely made out of Copper found near Old Newgate Prison & Copper Mine, in East Granby, CT? This little zine is full of the rich, local history and lore that revolves around the Higley Coppers. Included with the zine are four 1" buttons! The Higley Coppers were struck in an unknown number of iterations, but out of those that survive, there are two coins that feature designs that are just brilliant. These two coins and their four wonderfully illustrated and lettered faces, redrawn by me, are featured on the four buttons.

MORE INFO ON THIS ZINE!:
I made this zine when I moved back to East Granby from Tucson in 2018. Desperate to re-relate to the lands that grew me, I re-opened my eyes to all there was to see, feel, and learn in my immediate surroundings. Even as a child, this area drew me in and took me on adventures that left a candle of curiosity burning in me that, no matter how much it dimmed, never fully went out. As I started to feel into the mountains and rocks and energies around me, I became re-fascinated by the history surrounding Old New Gate (the pre-revolutionary era copper mine-turned-brutal prison). Soon after, I became momentarily obsessed with Higley's (and their value, hello!!). What a story! Who the hell was this Samuel Higley guy? These coins were in some ways my entry way into thinking more deeply about the America that existed after the Colonists landed but before America was born. The Higley's were so curious, and so lovely, that I felt the need to honor their creation (and brilliant/assuredly kooky creator!) with a little history and personal accessory love. After this project, I ended up doing a lot of work with Old New-Gate as their inaugural 2018 Artist and Writer in residence. Be sure to look for my illustration on their mugs when they re-open for the season this year! You can also purchase my other zines, Old Newgate Poems & More and The Rocks & Stones That Made Me here! Both of those delve deeper into the interests that were partially initially piqued by this project. These 1" buttons are also a great way to show your Connecticut love <3 Who doesn't love a history nerd who wears her interests on her sleeve? A huge hit amongst the local hardcore history heads! A must have for local hx lovers, Colonial era history peeps, 1" buttons collectors, and numismatics alike! |
