Ellen Arnstein is an intuitive artist, writer, mystic, craftsperson, and love warrior currently working outside of Hartford, CT. She is a Typewriter Poet for Hire, and was recently the first Artist & Writer in residence at Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine. She has been professionally creating, showing, and selling artist's books, textile arts, jewelry, and text and image based artwork for over 15 years (mostly under Rattfink Press), and has been writing fiction, poetry, and non-fiction for most of her life. Inspired by her move from Tucson back to Connecticut, and the histories -- both personal and external -- that surround her here, Ellen also recently began self-publishing her written works, releasing five zines in 2018.
She is currently for hire in a variety of capacities. She is interested in working with more local museums and heritage sites, helping to bring enrichment to their visitors through the written word, art, and interactive activities. She is available for events as a Typewriter For Hire, as well as for writing personal poems and creating custom illustrated poetry cards. She is open for illustration and design commissions and can quickly quote you for any project you have in mind.
Once lovingly referred to as quite the polymath, Ellen was raised in the culture and heritage world of New England, and has worked many jobs and gigs over her young years. She has sold fine art supplies to Hartford's creative (and curious) set; slung Tumi bags, Montblanc pens and Rhodia notebooks all under the same roof to literary elite of West Hartford; bought, sold, schlepped, and verbally appraised fine, rare, and worthless books in downtown Boston. She has had the pleasure of assisting some truly inspiring artist's both in the classroom and studio, led an activist parade troupe for 4 years (costuming, organizing, dancing -- you name it!), as well as taught a course on Sensory Ethnography and Food Culture alongside one of the world's foremost experts in tea. She has opened and run her own boutique, helped friends and colleagues start and grow their own businesses, and fostered and learned from countless teenagers from behind a counter. She has also been a student of metaphysics, western psychology, existentialist philosophy, and celebrity based culture for most of her 33 years on this beautiful planet, and works daily to honor her role as a love warrior, mystic, and guide.
A graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in association with Tufts University, as well as the Loomis Chaffee School, Ellen has spent the better part of her life establishing the skills and connections that have led her to where she is today.
Ellen is also currently searching for the right partner to help represent her and bring her love-driven, powerful work to a wider audience. If you are an agent or work with a publishing firm and feel like you may be the right fit, please contact her here.
Arnstein is also the creator of Finky the Ratt (aka Rattfink), and the author of the Finky the Ratt series - an illustrated book series that aims to help people young and old navigate life's circumstances with a mindful and peaceful perspective. She is currently seeking the right publisher to take on the legacy of Finky and his friends. If you think your publishing house may be the perfect fit, please contact her here.
