This t-shirt features Antonio Gramsci and Bertrand Russell, two of my favorite philosophers, revolutionaries, and holistic thinkers. WHO'S ON THE SHIRT?
ANTONIO GRAMSCI'S expansive thinking and utter devotion to the liberation of the Italian people led to some of the most powerful and clear-headed thinking about the structures of power and society that we have today. Gramsci helped found and lead the PCI, the Partito Comunista d'Italia, and as a result of his relentless work fighting against fascism he was imprisoned by Mussolini's fascist regime. Gramsci died in jail at the age of 46 after being held captive for eleven years. Despite the Italian government's attempt to silence him, Gramsci wrote some of his more meaningful works from his jail cell, creating a canon of literature that is as applicable today as it was during his time. His concepts of hegemony and the organic intellectual have continually helped me to contextualize, inform, and frame my own thoughts about society, well-being, and power and I am forever finding guidance and affirmation in his words.

Bertrand Russell - Bertie to those who loved him - wrote endlessly about fascism and was himself jailed twice as a result of actions he took against government injustices and unchecked power. He was jailed for six months in 1918 after lecturing against introducing the United States into WW1, and during his imprisonment wrote a seminal mathematics text as well as developed many of his ideas about the human mind. In 1963 at the age of 89 he was jailed again for seven days after his involvement in an anti-nuclear demonstration (yes, EIGHTY-NINE!). He wrote endlessly about fascism and its evils, even going so far as to attempt to trace its philosophical pathology in hopes of breaking its code. For me, its Russell's sardonic wit and endlessly reflexive and open-hearted nature that draw me back again and again, and I so often find his words and ways of understanding the world that surrounded him as powerful context and guidance for this modern life I - we - all live.
